downlighters - an explanation of down light fittings
As the name suggests, down lights are positioned to direct light downwards. They can be either fully or partially recessed or surface-mounted. They can also be either fixed or adjustable so you can focus light on a specific point, such as an object, picture or feature.
Glare can be an issue with downlights so you should be careful with positioning. They are often best combined with other types of fittings, such as table or floor lights.
Fully recessed down lights require adequate space above for ventilation and should be accessible for maintenance. Down lights may also require a fire hood if the fireproofing is not an integral part of the fitting. All of this should be checked with a qualified electrician.
